When the riches of the mines had been exhausted, the search for additional wealth moved inland and the Spaniards adopted a plantation based economy (Meyer, 2003). Products from the Americas such as tobacco, cotton, cocoa and sugar were becoming increasingly popular in Europe which caused the Caribbean plantations growing these commodities to grow accordingly. The shortage of man-power to operate these ever-growing plantations required many numbers of slaves from Africa to be imported. As the Spaniards were rea ping the rewards from its colonization of the Americas, their need for additional labor in the mines and plantations continued to grow. However, the local population was dwindling with the influx of disease and abuse and this, combined with Spain abolishing the enslavement of natives in the Americas in the mid 1500’s, necessitated a need to acquire Africans to fill their labor requirements (Meyer, 2003). By the early 19th century, the New World wealth had been well plundered and it was widely feared that the slaves emanating from there could spread new diseases in Europe or contract European diseases and die themselves. Africa was an attractive target to quench the Europeans’ new thirst to create far-away empires and control territories that held the raw materials needed to maintain and grow their prosperous economies which were built upon imperialistic tactics. New territories also meant the opportunity to trade with new markets. By the mid 19th century, the conquest for Africa was well underway. Gaining and controlling new territories outside the original country was justified by many explanations. A certain amount of national pride fueled the desire for an expansionist agenda. Obtaining new colonies was widely viewed as a gauge of a nation’s global prominence. Another justification was based on the prevalent racist attitude. â€Å"Europeans thought that they were better than Africans† (McDougal-Littell, 1999). Church officials and missionaries encouraged imperialism because the natives of conquered territories could be more easily coerced to convert to Christianity. In the initial phase of slavery in the New World (1519-1580), colonies were being formed and the trade of slaves was somewhat limited. From 1580 to 1650, slave trade from Africa soared because of the massive Native American deaths due to disease, the growth of the economy in the colonies and the unification of the Portuguese and Spanish governments (Palmer, 1976). The early era of colonization in the New World was a time of enormous changes as â€Å"the native Indian populations were decimated by disease and increasingly dominated by the Spanish social and economic structure† (Meyer, 2003). The Power of the Photograph On the wall of my dorm room hangs a photograph that was taken at my paternal grandmother’s house. I’m on Grandma’s lap, and my sister is on the floor. I appear to be about two or three years old. It is after supper, and Grandma is reading to me.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This photograph is interesting to me because it reflects two points that Michelle Citron makes in her book, Home Movies. First, the person taking the picture is asserting control over the interpretation of the memory. Second, there are clues within the frame that signify what has actually been left out of the frame. The item missing from this picture is my mother.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   My father took the picture in order to show me wearing the moccasins my maternal grandfather had just bought for me when we visited him. My mother had remained there, while we went on to visit grandmother. She rarely came with us to visit Grandma because they did not get along. Like her own mother, my mother could be moody, distant, and bad-tempered. Grandma, on the other hand, was somewhat meddlesome, but affectionate, and over-indulgent with us kids. Consequently, they argued over how we should be treated.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Grandma is pointing to the moccasins, which signify my mother’s absence. In some ways, the photo is a conciliatory gesture; my father is acknowledging his in-laws’ contribution to my happiness and well being. In another, less obvious way, it is an act of spite. Since my mother refused to be there, my father replaced her with his own mother in this happy family scene he has created.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Her absence is also highlighted by the presence of my sister, Rhonda, who was about nine or ten. When I was a baby, Rhonda and I were always in pictures together. Usually she’s playing â€Å"mommy† and holding me on her lap. She was very protective of me and would not let me out of her sight. Taking the role of my guardian often got her in trouble, especially when my mother’s temper flared. This movie depicts America as a country not yet adjusted to it’s multi-cultural residence. A movie that offers to it’s viewers nothing but images of Neo-Nazi cults and hate crimes, shouldn’t be allowed to be shown. American History X uses incorrect racial treatment, hurtful language, violence, and hate to create a version of America that does not exist. American History X follows a young and very racist boy who is part of a Neo-Nazi cult. The boy has been highly influenced by his older brother, a respected figure in the cult. Both of these characters are played by white males. American History X introduces almost the entire community as cruel Neo-Nazi cult members. Only a few characters are non-racist toward people of color and they all play small roles in the movies plot. By showing such a large community as racist Neo-Nazi cult followers American History X suggests that the white community of America is racist. What they fail to express is that, in reality, racism is handled much better. America has struggled for many years to create a country of equality. Instead of producing a movie that creates an unrealistic version of America, why not produce a movie that properly illustrates today’s society. Vulgar language is used throughout the entire movie. The excessive hurtful language is used to such an amount that it becomes almost a second language. Being exposed to such language for the entire movie’s length, creates a belief that these slurs are common talk amongst American communities. Racial slurs are regarded as one the highest forms of disrespect in actuality. The act of expressing one of these slurs in public can follow with severe punishment. Even the dialogue of American History X leads viewers into believing that communities of America are corrupt and filled with foul speakers. Violence is taken to an extreme in American History X. The movie flashes images of African Americans being killed, Latin Americans being ridiculed at gun point, and Arabian Americans being beaten. These strong hateful images have a strong influence on people. As with the rest of this movie’s negative content, white people are the dealers of violence. American History X shows some sort of violence toward a person of color in nearly every scene. Leading the viewer to believe that the white majority of America is a cruel and ugly people. It would be a lie to say that hate crimes do not still take place in America. Even though these crimes do happen, American History X depicts them with such frequency that the viewer may see them as frequent happenings in reality as well. Above all, American History X expresses hate. Hate is the strongest and most common trait amongst all characters. American History X depicts entire communities full of hate for others. The movies portrayal of hate is hurtful and unrealistic. Incorrect racial treatment, hurtful language, violence, and hate are used in American History X in a way that is harmful to viewers.
