The Two Faces of Man Exposed in The Lord of the Flies Essay -- Lord of
The Two Faces of Man Exposed in The Lord of the Fliesà à à à à à William Golding was inspired by his experiences in the Royal Navy during World War II when he wrote Lord of the Flies (Beetz 2514). Golding has said this about his book: The theme is an attempt to trace the defeats of society back to the defects of human nature. The moral is that the shape of society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system however apparently logical or respectable. The whole book is symbolic in nature except the rescue in the end where adult life appears, dignified and capable, but in reality enmeshed in the same evil as the symbolic life of the children on the island. (Epstein 204) à In the novel he displays the two different personalities that mankind possesses, one civilized, the other primitive. Golding uses the setting, characters, and symbolism in Lord of the Flies to give the reader a detailed description of these two faces of man. à The story's setting is essential for the evolution of both sides of man. When an airplane carrying a bunch of school boys crashes on an island, only the children survive. The island the children find themselves on is roughly boat-shaped (Golding 29; ch. 1). It is ironic that the children are stuck on an island shaped like the thing that could save them (a boat). Despite this irony, they are trapped. They are surrounded by ocean and no one knows where they are. The boys, isolated from society, must now create their own. à The children soon realize that there are, "No grownups!" (Golding 8; ch. 1) This means that the boys must fend for themselves until they are rescued. There are no parents or adults to give the boys rules or punish them i... ...etz, Kirk H., ed. Early Childhood Education: Raising Children the Right Way Essay
In early Childhood Education; teaching a child to read and write at early ages can have positive results when showing them educational videos and programs. Early Childhood Education is a field that will never lose significance. It sheds light on the best parenting styles and other significant issues related to raising children. It also gives us a glimpse of how young children perceive the world and how we can put this new knowledge to use for the benefits of children, parents and society. Young children slowly develop a concept of gender through interaction with their environment. Children perception of gender and how they define differences between male and female gender roles would offer an excellent research topic in early childhood education. Particularly during the first three years are critical and influence the child for life. Learning is not confined to children of a certain age or to a formal school environment. Encouraging children to play and explore with other children helps them learn and develop socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. Play is central to childrenââ¬â¢s learning, regardless of the actual content. The process play helps children get involved with exploration, language experimentation, cognition, and also the development of social skills. Being interactive with other children teaches them about who they are and about the people around them. Early Childhood education affects a childââ¬â¢s learning somewhat in a good way in somewhat not. When a child goes to a pre-school with teachers that will teach them what they will need to know for the upcoming year those students will have a better chance when they get to kindergarten, but if a child goes to a pre-school with little learning material or teaching style those students might have a hard time keeping up with the students that had a better learning experience. Recent study | Published in the Journal of Early Childhood Research | this study found the quality of a pre-school significantly predicts a childââ¬â¢s educational success. Not all early childhood education is created equal. Not only is it important for parents to do their research when choosing a pre-school for their child, but itââ¬â¢s also important for our child care professionals and teachers to be well trained. A teacherââ¬â¢s educational experience greatly affects the overall delivery of a childââ¬â¢s learning in many ways. According to the | National Association for the Education of Young Childrenââ¬â¢s | (NAEYC) Position statement on standards for programs to prepare early childhood professionals, the level of a teacherââ¬â¢s education directly affects any benefits the child may receive from the program. This includes early learning and development in cognitive, social, emotional and physical domains. High quality college courses will give the teacher specialized knowledge that will help to inform his decisions, teaching methods and curriculum creation. For example a teacher with extensive knowledge in child development will be able to assess each childââ¬â¢s abilities and identify potential developmental delays and/ or adapt curriculum to fit the childââ¬â¢s needs. It is important to understand child development and to recognize each childââ¬â¢s individual characteristics and cultural background when planning learning activities that enable children to ââ¬Å"make sense of their worldâ⬠. Children develop the skills necessary to solve real life problems and become better prepared to think for themselves when they are exposed to experiences that: 1) spark interest and curiosity, 2) integrate learning experiences, and 3) structure their thinking. These are some skills that are used in the process of childhood education: Symbolization- Students use symbols to represent an idea, Observation- students use senses to learn about something in detail, description- students verbally portray attributes of an object, person, scene, or event and itââ¬â¢s so many more skills that help a child in their childhood development. (www. uen. org) Benefits of early childhood education provide children with the skills that will help increase their vocabulary development and cognitive abilities. Children start learning from birth, early childhood education, whether it is in a local head-start program, a pre-school or at home, can help a child increase vocabulary development by familiarizing them with words and their meanings. According to | Rand Corporation Research | early education has lasting benefits, showing increases in IQ levels and cognitive abilities such as the ability to understand both concepts and abstract thoughts. Children exposed to early childhood education can be more prepared for social environments. A child becomes competent in learning to socially interact with adults and other children. With parental support, the child can learn not only what is socially appropriate in the classroom, but also in public places and in their home. Social competency is a key skill for a child to learn, as it will benefit them throughout their life time. Like clay, children are highly moldable in their preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary years. Between the ages of five and eight, children are actively engaged in making sense of the large, confusing world around them. In this stage, it is important that children receive the educational guidance that urges them to explore and enthusiastically interact with their setting as they develop socially, physically, intellectually, creatively and emotionally. In this early stage of development, much learning is cultivated by play or playful learning. With the world advancing technologically by the day, new and innovative methods to engage young children and accelerate their development are emerging. It is up to the early childhood educator to seize on these developments as they work to cultivate a life-long sense of curiosity and exploration in the future leaders of tomorrow. (Early Childhood Education. com) Conducting learning activities by applying the concepts of contemplative education is what to emphasize the personal transformation of first year students majoring in Early Childhood Education to meet the national standard on the required characteristics of citizens. The objectives of this research were to compare studentsââ¬â¢ mean score in each aspect of E. Q. with the norm of the Department of Mental Health; to compare studentsââ¬â¢ mean score of E. Q. before and after conducting the activities; and to study studentsââ¬â¢ opinions on the learning activities. (University Library) Although the number of children enrolled in early childhood education and care has risen dramatically over past decades, low-income children are less likely than their more affluent counterparts to participate. Public funding for early education can play an important role in increasing enrollment levels among low-income children. This study utilizes National Household Education Survey data for a 14-year period to examine the effects of public funding on the enrollment of low-income children in early childhood education and care. It also considers the effects of funding on the type of care they use. Results suggest that public funding, particularly child-care subsidies and prekindergarten funding, increases the likelihood that low-income children, even those under 3 years of age, will attend non-parental care, including center-based care. These findings indicate that public funding can help close the gap in enrollment between low- and higher-income children. (University Library) Early education can increase cognitive skills in children, according to |Katherine A. Magnuson and her colleagues who report in the February 2007 issue of ââ¬Å"Economics of Education Reviewâ⬠| that children from under-served communities who attended preschool showed more cognitive improvement than their peers. Columbia University researchers confirm this connection through their study published in the July 2003 issue of ââ¬Å"Developmental Psychology. â⬠They found that prematurely born 8 year olds who attended 400 or more days of preschool at ages 2 and 3 years old scored higher on IQ tests than prematurely born 8 year olds of similar backgrounds who attended preschool less often. Children going through early education has great out comes like, improved cognitive skills can lead to improved academic results. Magnusonââ¬â¢s study indicated that children enrolled in prekindergarten performed better in reading and mathematics when they entered grade school. Children enrolled in early childhood education programs are less likely to be held back a grade in school, according to the Public Policy Forum. These children also have a decreased likelihood of being enrolled in special education remedial programs. The future of early childhood education school programs is bright. As more children are born in the United States and other developing countries, educational programs for children will always be needed to prepare them for careers that will help sustain our global society. There will always be a need for an early childhood education program in fields such as bilingual education, literacy, mathematics and science. According to the statistics provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the United States Department of Labor, employment demand for careers in secondary, middle and elementary schools are expected to show a significant increase. These positions will be available because of the increase in the population, but the demand will also increase due the retirement of teachers within urban areas of the United States. Therefore, there will be more than 244,000 additional jobs available by 2018 for those that have acquired an ECE degree. Additionally, teaching assistant positions are expected to have an increased demand by as much as 10 percent, while administrative positions in early childhood education school setting will have a demand growth by as much as 8 percent. Educational providers of ECE degree programs will need to prepare for these significant increases by training new educators now. Positive Aspects of Globalization Essay - 1843 Words
Introduction During the last decade of the twentieth century, the word ââ¬Ëglobalizationââ¬â¢ has become an increasingly prominent feature of political, social, and economic discussion in academic and policymaking circles, as well as in the media. The processes and outcomes of globalization drew attention and debates that had one thing in common. The research shows that nearly everyone agrees that globalization is a trend that is changing the face of the world, and as a result the world society lives in a more ââ¬Ëglobalizedââ¬â¢ world. Nearly two and a half decades passed since 1990s, and studies have been conducted to examine the causes and consequences of globalization. Moreover, nearly every person experiences some type of globalization and canâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Barrie Axford, in his book Theories of Globalization (2013) categorized globalization theories according to the perspective used for creating frameworks for explaining the phenomenon and divided th eories into groups that view globalization through the frameworks of space, culture, communication, history, capitalism and economy, political science and governance, geography, and anthropology. Therefore, there is a wealth of perspectives that help to examine globalization and its impact. Lechner (2001) divided theories according to the nature of globalization processes and offered three broad categories: (a) world-system theory (economic drivers of globalization), (b) world policy theory (political and legal drivers of globalization); (c) world culture theory (culture and communication as globalization drivers). In Robinsonââ¬â¢s (2004) work A Theory of Global Capitalism: Production, Class, and State in a Transnational State does not provide an organized classification of globalization theories. He presents a variety of theories that explain different aspects of globalization from the standpoints of Marxism, postmodernism, functionalism and involve distinct approaches such as cultural, international relations, post-colonial studies, etc. The author purposely does not provide classification of globalization theories since, in his opinion; most theories draw on traditions and contributions of multiple disciplines and have an interdisciplinary character. Pop Culture Archetype Comparison Free Essays
The archetype of the villain is seen in many Disney fairytales and are usually one of the most important characters in the films. Shan Yu from Mulan and Scar from The Lion King although are from different backgrounds and different plots both display the same characteristics and thought processes. SIMILARITY 1-The primary similarity between Shan Yu and Scar is that they both will stop at nothing in order to conquer the land and power that they think they deserve. We will write a custom essay sample on Pop Culture Archetype Comparison or any similar topic only for you Order Now This is seen in Mulan, where Shan-Yu feels no hesitation when it comes to taking a life. He kills without remorse, for his own amusement. This is demonstrated when he asks ââ¬Å"How many men does it take to deliver a message? â⬠to which one of his henchmen replies ââ¬Å"oneâ⬠as he aims his arrow at one of two Chinese spies. This is also seen in The Lion King. Scar the evil brother of Mufasa will do anything to become King of the Pride Lands, even if it means killing his brother and his nephew Simba. Although he only succeeds in murdering Mufasa, he convinces his nephew that it was his fault, leaving Simba to live with the guilt of his fatherââ¬â¢s death and tells the cub to ââ¬Ërun far away, Simba, and never come backââ¬â¢. SIMILARITY 2-The second similarity between Shan Yu and Scar is their similar deaths, in which the hero takes part in taking down the villain. Shan Yu gets thrown off a building by Mulan and Scar is pushed off a cliff by Simba. CONCLUSION- Therefore both characters are seen as the classic archetype villain and have many similarities such as their lust for superiority and power. However, while both characters have many similarities between them they also demonstrate some differences as well. DIFFERENCE 1- A major difference between the two characters is that Shan Yu is a Mongolian leader of the huns whereas Scar is a lion from Africa. Although Scar is not a human being, the character still demonstrates the same desire to conquer the land. DIFFERENCE 2- The second difference between Shan Yu and Scar is the means in which Scar grew up, for example growing up Scarââ¬â¢s father spent more time and attention on his other son Mufasa. This ultimately leads to Scar hating his brother and constantly seeking revenge against him. While, for Shan Yu, growing up because of his cultural and political background he has always hated the Chinese and wanted to take them down. However, the two characters both attempt to conquer and take down their opposing forces whether it is their family or political enemies. Relevance- The significance of the archetype of the villain in both films is that they essentially help the main character, the hero to complete a quest or journey of finding who they really are. In Mulan, if it were not because of Shan Yu and the threat of the war, then she would have never had to change her lifestyle or leave her family behind. This would not have made her the person she became towards the end of the film. The same goes for Simba, if it were not for Scar telling him his father had died and there was nothing left for him there, furthermore he was able to see how others lived and decide that he wanted to rule. Conclusion- In conclusion, while both characters are archetypes of the classic villain. They both demonstrate the same ideals and desires to be achieve total control and superiority over the people around them. How to cite Pop Culture Archetype Comparison, Papers

Under My Skin by Avril Lavigne free essay sample
Shes back, and shes little more girly and little more grown up. The Sk8r Boi singer had returned with yet another incredibly addicting and unique album. While most teenage female singers find their albums invaded and taken over by sappy love songs and break-up songs, Under My Skin shows the stronger and tougher side to the female heart. Together shows Avril having to make the decision to walk away from a relationship that isnt working; And Dont Tell Me is a rarity in music. The song is about Avril, in her sweet punk way, telling a guy no to sex. Its one of my favorite songs on the album simply because of the message. Its a message not heard often in the Hollywood spotlight. Aly and AJs Blush, one of the only other songs about abstinence Ive ever heard, was removed from the majority of their Insomniatic albums, since MTV wished not to promote abstinence. We will write a custom essay sample on Under My Skin by Avril Lavigne or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It seems Hollywood would rather promote those who promote pre-marital sex and not promote those who promote abstinence. I applaud Avril for this song, since its one of only two I have found in Hollywood, although she is from Canada, so maybe Canadians are different. I hope this track will inspire girls to say no and remember that [theyre] not like that girl, the one who gives it all away. Avrils punk ranting about a disrespectful guy on He Wasnt makes this song another favorite. I understand that guys wont be perfect, they never have been, ever since the Garden of Eden, and they never will be, but that doesnt mean they shouldnt be a gentleman and respectful towards their girlfriends. Avril understands this and the fact that if a guy isnt respectful and a gentleman, then hes not worth you. The songs My Happy Ending, Fall To Pieces, Take Me Away, How Does It Feel, Nobodys Home, Forgotten, Who Knows and Freak Out tie the album together with Avrils unique messages and writing styles, and Slipped Away can be dedicated to anyone who has ever lost a loved one (the song is dedicated to Avrils Grandpa). The edginess and dark lyrical and musical stylings make the album highly addictive. The album is also quite personal since eight out of the twelve tracks are co-written by Avril and the other four she penned herself. The only caution is that Dont Tell Me is openly about sex and abstinence and a cuss word is dropped in both Dont Tell Me and My Happy Ending. Other than that, Under My Skin is a hit. Its incredibly addicting with Avrils punk-rock attitude, the heavy guitar anthems and unique lyrics. Do not begin this album without having time to listen it through; you simply wont be able to turn it off.
